Thursday Evening (13.2.14)

After helping at Jinja Christian Primary School today, when I was out in Wairaka and I saw kids, lots of them waved and shouted "Teacher Rachael bye!" instead of "Mzungu bye" haha so maybe I'm no longer just "white person"!

This evening I went into the Village of Hope. There are 10 houses (I think) which each have 8 orphans and a widow as a mother. The houses are in pairs and face inwards where there is the cooking area and a table with benches around it.

In the evening before supper and bed time, the kids from each house gather round their table and to Devotions. This consists of all standing and singing worship songs together, clapping and taking turns to lead the singing (their voices are so good). Then then all sit down and pray out loud all at the same time. It is so amazing to see and hear as these children are aged between about 4 and 16. Seeing the little ones praying with such passion and focus is so encouraging and challenging, they are so adult-like! They all have such strong faith which is beautiful. The mother then reads from the bible and talks, then asks what they have learnt. The kids say things like "I have learnt that we must love our friends" or "we must tell God our worries". Then they pray and sing more.

At the end I stayed and sat with them at the table and we just chilled together, some were sat on my knee, some were talking to me or throwing my tennis ball back and forward or posing in my sunglasses, and some behind me playing with my hair. They are all so loving and friendly and I'm getting to know so many of them closely already.

  1. Hi - that sounds brilliant! Try and get the singing recorded as you will miss that when you return? xx
