Home of Hope for disabled children - Week 1 visit

Rode on the back of a boda (motorbike) for the first time today which costed me about 30p for a ride to the disabled home - ridiculously cheap...
They are so fun! However I was literally orange when I got home from all the dust.

I absolutely love spending time at Home of Hope. Today I helped feed the children which is very messy as most cant swallow or take in food or drink very well. It's very noisy as lots of the children lie on the floor shouting or crying loudly so I try and sit with them and calm them down.
Jeffery was running around and dragging me all over the place. He didn't hit me in the face this time... but he did try biting me a few times! He is very loving apart from that.

I sat with a little boy aged about 5 called Wasswa who suffers from Hydrocephalus which causes water on the brain resulting in enlargement of the head, can affect vision and mental disability. He is such a lovely boy and he could actually talk to me a bit.
He told me his name and asked mine. He spoke a bit of English which was really good. He kept repeating the phrase "excuse me" which he has obviously learnt from hearing people say it. He has extremely weak limbs so just sits by the wall. After a while of sitting next to him I asked if he wanted to go for a walk.

I put him in a wheelchair and we set off down along the path that passes little mud houses and lots of trees.
He loved being outside and while I chatted to him he would repeat everything I said. I taught him some words and so when we passed chickens or goats and he would say "jambo (hello) chickens" or "bye goats". He carried on repeating the phrase excuse me and then giggling, it was so funny. He is quite intelligent and very cheeky, and he loved talking to Ugandan people as we passed them. We were out for way over an hour together, I have no idea where we even went there were just little mud huts and palm trees at the side of the path and lots of little children waving and shouting mzungu.
He wanted to sing and when I played "Waka waka" on my phone for him he actually knew it. It was so cute he was singing along to the words as I pushed him along and the sun was shining and it was just a lovely moment.

  3. Hey Mzungu Silvester ;) This is definitely my favourite one of all your stories so far, what a wonderful moment! Great reporting too by the way, you are going to have so many of these times to talk about before you come back, this blog is a brilliant idea. Will link it to the Energy page now to remind people where to find it. Am planning Encounter stuff with Mr Dent tomorrow, we will message you after... just cos you've moved continents doesn't mean you've escaped! Chat later, stay safe kidda, J x
